The most significant holiday in China, reaching across vast distances, is the Spring Festival, also recognized as the Chinese New Year. To the Chinese, its importance parallels Christmas in Western cultures. The timing of this annual celebration is determined by the lunar calendar, rather than the Gregorian calendar, making the holiday fall between late January and early February.

For the ordinary Chinese, the festival commences on the eve of the lunar New Year's Day and extends until the fifth day of the new lunar calendar. However, in many regions, the 15th day of the first month, known as the Lantern Festival, signifies the official conclusion of the Spring Festival.

In the final days of the previous lunar month, preparations for the New Year commence. This involves thoroughly cleaning houses, repaying debts, getting haircuts, and purchasing new clothes. Homes are adorned with paper scrolls bearing auspicious antithetical couplets. Many families also burn incense at home and in temples to pay respects to ancestors and implore the gods for good health in the coming months.

Among the Chinese, the term "Guo Nian" is commonly used to celebrate the Spring Festival, which actually means greeting the new year. At midnight on the eve of the new year, people traditionally set off firecrackers to ward off evil spirits and celebrate the arrival of the new year. The sound of these firecrackers would instantly drown the city in a deafening roar.

On New Year's Eve, all family members gather for a festive meal. In the north, Jiaozi, a steamed dumpling, is a popular choice, while in the south, a sticky sweet glutinous rice pudding called nian gao is favored.

According to a popular legend, there was a monster called "Nian" with a vast mouth that could swallow numerous people in one gulp, causing great fear among the populace.
